Do you find it difficult to diary time to induct new staff?
"Using Andrew Hall's blended method, it could take just one hour of your time to create your own video induction programme."
What DSLs can learn from EasyJet and Balfour Beatty
Every year EasyJet need to help millions of ordinary people understand what to do in an aviation emergency. Balfour Beatty share safety messages daily with their thousands of contractors. Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) need to ensure that new staff know how to keep children safe from harm from day one.
But it's not always easy to find time for induction
Last year I flew on Iceland air and they have dispensed with the traditional air crew demonstration of emergency procedures. They now draw passengers attention to a short video. As I watched the safety film play, it struck me that one way to induct new staff into school is by using video.
Learning by video is always available and quick assessments can evidence compliance
Specialist Safeguarding Consultant, Andrew Hall, has been creating safeguarding CPD resources and learning videos for many years and has now created induction content for you to use with your new staff.
Why have generic training when you can have custom?
One of the challenges with any video content is that it is time-consuming to create. Another problem is that it is often generic and does not include your school's personalised information.
Let's blend your local knowledge and Andrew's safeguarding specialism
Andrew has now created an effective process to create a video-based learning package that blends his specialist knowledge of safeguarding and the expert knowledge you have of your school.
"We create custom video learning content to induct new staff into the safeguarding procedures of your school, so that they can effectively safeguard pupils from Day One!" Andrew Hall, Specialist Safeguarding Consultant
How does a video induction package help?
- DSLs save time trying to fit induction into their busy schedule
- New staff can safeguard your pupils immediately
- Staff can be prompted to access the safeguarding learning platform by admin staff
- Consistent message given to everyone
- Agency staff can be asked to view the induction, even before they arrive at your school
- Evidence the safeguarding training staff have had
- Custom content means that new staff are introduced to specific staff members and know where to find them
- Local issues can be identified to raise awareness
- Staff can be walked through any paperwork or documentation they need to complete
- Policy, procedures and guidance documents can be included so that they can be easily shared
- Content can be refreshed when needed
How is the content created?
Specialist Safeguarding Consultant, Andrew Hall, has already created two induction learning packages of different lengths aimed at staff in different roles. The content is drawn from Keeping Children Safe in Education and other guidance documents.
How we create your custom content
There are two ways to create your school's custom content: recorded by you; and recorded by us!
Typically, everything you need to record your custom content is easily available in school. Many of us are now comfortable teaching online and this is no different!
Do It Yourself
We'll send you a 'fill-in-the-blanks' script and a storyboard of images or video and you'll simply follow along! Once the video has been recorded, you'll send it to us, we'll edit it and upload it to our learning platform.
Done with You
If you would like us to help, Andrew will meet with you online for up to an hour and record a video conversation which we will edit to create your induction content.
Technically, all you'll need to do is ready yourself for a video call making sure that you're well lit and your microphone sound is clear. (We can send out a loan microphone if you wish.)
In around an hour, you will have created your custom content
We'll send you the questions and topics to be included in your custom content, so that you can have the information ready.
Once you're all set up with the information you need, the recording shouldn't take more than an hour.
For best results, you'll need a video camera (a mobile phone is perfect for this), an external mic (from about £20 on amazon) and to be well-lit.
After the recording what happens next?
After editing, we upload the video to our learning platform along with any documents you want staff to access, read or download.
For a better custom experience for your staff, you can also supply video footage or stills of your school to put in the video. (It can be taken on a mobile phone and we'll send you a list of ideas.)
Can we just access Andrew's induction course without any custom content?
Yes, of course. We'll just give you 12 months access to our learning platform on a pay-as-you go basis.
How do new staff access your Induction Course?
Once created, your induction course will be available on our learning platform for 12 months.
The learning platform is accessible on computers, tablets and phones.
At the end of the course certificates are sent out and can be shared with DSLs to build your training evidence base.
